How to Choose the Right SPF

What is the Right SPF

If you’re planning to be outside a lot this summer, it’s time to invest in good sunscreen. Sunscreen is so important for your skin’s health and protection — without it, you face harmful UV rays that could lead to skin cancer. Ready to invest in sunscreen? Start here.

What does SPF mean?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. A common misconception is that higher SPF = higher protection from the sun. The reality is the SPF number stands for how long the sunscreen protects you from UV rays.

What SPF number do you need?

The way your SPF number works depends on how long it takes you to burn in the sun. If it takes you 10 minutes to burn, you multiply that number of minutes by the SPF number. Let’s use SPF 15 as an example. If you burn in 10 minutes and you apply SPF 15, you multiply 10 x 15. So, you’ll have 150 minutes of not burning. After that time, you’ll need to reapply your sunscreen.

Do you even need to wear sunscreen?

The answer is yes — times a million! Sunscreen is an absolute must, but the SPF number is up to you. As long as you’re in tune with your body and you reapply your sunscreen as needed, you’ll be protected when you’re outside.
