Will The Excitement Around The New Baywatch Movie Help End The Lifeguard Shortage?

Lifeguard Shortage

With all the buzz and excitement surrounding the big screen debut of the Baywatch Movie, many lifeguard and aquatic facility supervisors are hoping that there will be a renewed interest in lifeguarding. Lifeguard job applicants have become increasingly scarce in recent years. Many young teens and adults have shied away from the time honored profession due to the lack of interest in training and testing for such a position, which can often consumes a lot of time, energy, and money.

The hope is that a new generation of young people will be enthralled by the action sequences and the beach lifestyle of adventure and leisure. Aquatic facilities from Atlanta to Chicago to Portland, Oregon and just about everywhere in between find themselves in a desperate search for lifeguards. As Memorial Day Weekend, the ceremonial opening date for many pools and beaches nationwide, quickly approaches, the race to hire qualified lifeguard applicants heats up.

The Baywatch TV Series had this desired effect of creating interest in lifeguarding back in the 1980s and 90s according to Wyatt Werneth, the National Spokesperson for the American Lifeguard Association, who says that he was personally inspired by the Baywatch TV Series to begin his long career in lifeguarding, which culminated in his position as Lifeguard Chief for Brevard County, Florida.
