This Week in Lifeguard News – Lifeguard Limelight

Lifeguards all over the world for so many decades have been known to execute several rescues. Some of which they are celebrated for, some others just go in the “Oh, that one time when that lifeguard rescued…” section. Here on Lifeguard Times™ we cannot overemphasize how committed we are to the task of bringing all these untold activities to the limelight and by extension, properly celebrate our heroes.

Sandals Lifeguard Receives Commonwealth Honor

Lifeguard Limelight Zacheus Dominique Commonwealth MedalZacheus Dominique, a lifeguard and aqua center employee at Sandals Regency La Toc Golf Resort & Spa, St Lucia, recently earned the Commonwealth Mountbatten Medal on Tuesday October 18, 2016 for his heroics at the La Toc beach on Monday February 23, 2015, when he rescued a local resident from drowning and several others from the harsh conditions of the rough seas, through his vigilance and persistence.

The Mountbatten Medal is an annual award for the most gallant rescue or rescue attempt carried out in the previous calendar year. While the rescue attempt or rescue can be carried out anywhere in the world, the Mountbatten Medal will be awarded only to citizens of Commonwealth nations.

The medal which is second only to the global grouping’s lifetime achievement honors would be presented to Dominique at the Buckingham Palace in November with Sandals Resorts International promising to cater for all Dominique’s travel expenses to receive this honor in person.

Dominique who was just recently honored by the Sandals La Toc during a small ceremony at the resort is also a member of the St Lucia Life Saving Society – an affiliate of the Commonwealth Royal Life Saving Society.

Lifeguards Save Two People Off La Jolla Coast

Lifeguard Limelight surf rescueSometime around 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2016, the weekend took a busy turn for lifeguards as they had to rescue two people off the coast of La Jolla. When two people about 200 yards offshore near Marine Street waved for help, the lifeguards knew exactly what they needed to do –dive and rescue. Reports say one of the victims had been on a surfboard while the other was on a boogie board but neither was injured during the incident.

Auckland Off-Duty Lifeguard Saves Drowning Dog

Lifeguard limelight aucklandAn off-duty lifeguard, Zane Rademaker put his skills to good use when he rescued a dog from the Bethells Beach Surf (which according to him was his first sea-based animal rescue). While on training drill Rademaker spotted a family trying to cross an estuary with their three dogs when a wave swept over and dragged their pit bull with it. The 24-year-old senior lifeguard sprang into action, plucking the dog from the surf then checked its vitals. Rademaker and the dog’s owner started CPR on the dog as it didn’t have a pulse. The dog was later taken to the vet for thorough examination

LA County Lifeguards Rescue Seven People In Two Separate Incidents

According to officials, LA county lifeguards helped to rescue a total of seven people in two separate boating mishaps Friday, in Redondo Beach and in Venice respectively.

According to the LA County Fire Department, three people had to be rescued on Friday when their sailboat burst into flames 11 miles off the coast of Redondo Beach. Reports say when Firefighters and the U.S. Coast Guard arrived on the scene around 3:00 p.m. after receiving a mayday call, they found a 44-foot sailboat engulfed in flames; the boat’s engine had allegedly caught fire and quickly spread.

Lifeguard Limelight redondo beach fireIt took 45 minutes of work for firefighters to extinguish the flames. Recounting the incident, Petty Officer First Class Sondra Kneen said two people were rescued from the boat while another was pulled from the water. One victim had minor burn injuries

The trio was said to be on their way to Catalina Island when their boat caught fire and interrupted their plans.

Meanwhile, reports from the Los Angeles Fire Department say in Venice at about 5:20 p.m. Friday, four people had to be rescued from a capsized 14-foot powerboat near Privateer Street in Venice.

All four victims were described as being in their 50s. Reports further say that two of the four victims taken to a hospital were in critical condition while LA county lifeguards remained on scene to remove the vessel from the surf line.

Lifeguards Save Tourist From Drowning In Odisha, India

A tourist has the timely intervention and dogged efforts of some lifeguards to thank for his rescue from the sea at Gopalpur in Odisha’s Ganjam district, India on October 16, 2016.

Lifeguard Limelight DrowningThe victim, Situ Kumar along with six other men from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh were said to have been on a tour to Gopalpur and were bathing in the sea when the victim suddenly got swept away by the tide to about 1.5 km from the shore.

Staffs of a local TV news channel spotted the victim waving his hand and alerted the lifeguards on duty at the beach.

Two lifeguards T T Babu and Kali Shankar along with other members of their team braved the high tides to rescue the victim. The rescue effort took about half an hour.

The victim expressed his gratitude to the lifeguards after recuperating.
