As we all know, a lifeguard is a special person dedicated to ensuring the safety of those in face of danger and in some cases, death. Regardless of these harsh realities, lifeguards are constantly putting their lives on the line to ensure someone in peril will live to see yet another day. Lifeguard competitions combine fun and rivalry to allow us to truly appreciate all that lifeguards do for us. Here’s a rundown of the 2016 Lifeguard Competitions from all around the world. From the California Surf Lifesaving Association Junior Lifeguard 2016 Regionals to the Lifesaving World Championships in the Netherlands, Lifeguard Times is ready to take a virtual tour of the greatest guard tournaments.

HAPPENING: CALIFORNIA

Summer Lifeguard Competitions Heat UpOn Friday, July 22, 2016, one of the most attended lifeguard events, the CSLSA Junior Guard Surf Lifesaving Championship, will be hosted by Huntington State Beach. The following day, the CSLSA Surf Lifesaving Championship will be taking place at the same venue. In 2015, Cal State Parks were the 3peat CSLSA Champions with a whopping 1529.25 points, 362.5 points away from LACOLA in second place with 1166.75 points.

Meanwhile, the 2016 USLA National Lifeguard and Junior Lifeguard Championships will be held from August 10, 2016, to August 13, 2016, at the Hermosa Beach, California. Meanwhile in New Jersey…

NEW JERSEY

Tuesday, July 26, 2016, is the date to remember, USLA Mid-Atlantic Regional Junior Lifesaving Championship is the event at Ashbury Park, New Jersey. Any USLA junior guard member of the Mid-Atlantic may participate for a low fee of $20.00. It will be an action-packed day filled with skill-based events, including beach runs, relay races, and swimming endurance exercises.

HAPPENED: NEW JERSEY

Red Bull Surf + Rescue, an elite lifeguarding competition exclusive to New Jersey Beach Patrols was held on July 19, 2016, at Steel Pier Atlantic, New Jersey. The contest focused on classic disciplines including swimming, sprinting, prone paddleboard relay, and lifeguard boat rowing. 40 teams went head-to-head through progressive elimination rounds before the Longport Beach Patrol Team emerged winners.

AROUND THE WORLD : Canada

Summer Lifeguard Competitions Heat UpMoving on from the United States, The Canadian Surf Lifesaving Championships 2016 will be happening from August 26, 2016 to August 28, 2016 at Parlee Beach Provincial Park, Shediac, New Brunswick. Recall that the 2015 championship was hosted by the Lifesaving Society Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service at Rainbow Haven and Martinique beaches, Nova Scotia.

NETHERLANDS

Every two years the International Life Saving Federation (ILS) organizes the Lifesaving World Championships, called Rescue Series.
The World Championships include:

  • The World Championships for National Teams – Open.
  • The World Championships for National Teams – Youth.
  • The World Championships for Club Teams – Open.
  • The World Championships for Club Teams – Youth.
  • The World Championships for Masters.
  • The World Championships for Surf boats.
  • The World Championships for Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRB).
  • The World Championships for Extra Events such as March Past, Long distance Races, etc.

It usually involves between 4,000 and 5,000 competitors and officials and lasts 12-14 days; however, this year’s event will be taking place from September 1-September 18, 2016.
This year’s Rescue 2016 will take place in the Netherlands: the pool events will be held in Eindhoven and the beach events in Noordwijk Aan Zee.
