Bystander and Lifeguards Rescue Woman Swept Off Reef in La Jolla

Lifeguard Weekly NewsThanks to a bystander and lifeguards, a woman who had been swept off a reef by a wave near La Jolla Cove can live to tell the tale. Reports say the bystander heard her scream and rushed to her rescue. An onlooker dialed 911 to report a struggling woman screaming for help in the water off Coast Walk Trail, at about 5:30 p.m.

The bystander jumped into the ocean, keeping the woman afloat until lifeguards arrived and started CPR on her. Reports say a lifeguard who gave the woman CPR suffered a broken finger and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

ISRO, Lifeguard Agency Collaborate To Study Killer Tides

The beaches in Goa are known to attract millions of tourists yearly. While the concept of tourists having fun on Indian waters is quite welcome, the unpredictability of the tides give beach goers a little something to be worried about.

This is why the Indian Space Research Organization, in partnership with a private lifeguard agency, is undertaking a study on rip tide effects and killer tides in the ocean in an effort to protect and make its beaches safer.

With the aid of a special high-tech device and the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System as well as a navigation receiver, team of scientists, and lifeguarding specialists, the presence of active rips along some beaches on January 31 to February 1. The results were documented for future research.

It is recorded that rip tides are causative factors of most drowning incidents, and the ISRO intends to reduce these numbers, by studying them.

Ponds Lifeguard Terry Turner Hangs Up His Trunks After 40 Years

Lifeguard Weekly NewsA 66 year old lifeguard, Terry Turner has graciously retired from active duty. Turner spent 40 years as lifeguard at Hampstead Heath ponds.

Terry, who had spent four decades being the hawk-eye at Hampstead Heath ponds, never shifting attention from swimmers, got his fair share of attention as he completed his final shift of four decades at the weekend.

Terry, 66, hung up his trunks on Sunday when colleagues, friends and swimmers threw a party for the popular lifeguard at the men’s ponds.

Prior to becoming a lifeguard, Turner was a zookeeper and was in the military.
